Silk making has existed in Thailand since ancient times. Traces of silk thread (3000 years old) were found in Ban-Chiang, udon Thani.
The sheen of woven silk cloth is it's most admired quality. This comes from the structure of silk fibres, which are triangular in cross section and so reflect light like prisms. It also has layers of protein that adds luster and smoothness to it's natural sheen. At the same time, this fibre is immensely strong for it's light weight, and, both elastic and supple.
The cloth made from Thai Silk has a relatively coarse texture with uneven slightly knotty threads. this imperfection gives it a special beauty and extremely suitable for hand weaving.
Today, silk is still an integral part of life in the rural areas. Women work in the rice fields during the plantation and harvesting and turn to silkworm reeling, spinning, weaving and dyeing during the rest of the year.
